My friends at American Christmas asked my company, Dravot Carnehan Studios, to shoot the unveiling of their latest creation, the 2014 Saks Fifth Avenue Holiday Light display. Anyone who has visited New York City during the Holidays has probably seen American Christmas’ work. They are responsible for many of the city’s most iconic Holiday displays, including Rockefeller Center, Cartier and Radio City Music Hall.
This years theme is “An Enchanted Experience.” The November 24th unveiling included an appearance by the world famous Radio City Rockettes as well as a grand finale fireworks display provided by Grucci. Fifth Avenue was shut down between 49th and 50th streets during the length of the premiere. VIP’s viewed the show from grandstand seating set up along the West side of the avenue while onlookers lined the barricades on either side.
The week leading up the the event consisted of freezing cold temperatures accompanied by rain. As if on cue, the rain ceased on the morning of the show and temperatures rose to a near record 70 degrees. We had cameras set up on the roof of the building across from Saks as well as on the street. The talented Holly Gillen was on Rockette Cam. I wish the street shot of the Rockettes could have been from a better angle, but due to heavy security we had to work with the spot that we were provided. No complaints here, it was a great shoot.
